At the Tulip Orphanage, the Rules for Baby Deliveries have never been broken. Not once. Until the autumn of 1880, when five children appear there in horrific conditions: one of them, in a tin toolbox; another, in a coal bucket; the third, in a picnic basket; another, in a sack of wheat and, finally, the fifth, in a coffin-shaped basket. These babies are Lotta, Egg, Fenna, Sem and Milou. And although their cruel matron may think they are "unadoptable," they know that their peculiarities are precisely what makes them special; and they are determined to stay together. When a sinister gentleman threatens to separate them, the group of friends embarks on a brave escape through the icy canals of Amsterdam. But will their true home (and their real family) be much closer than they imagine?
