Ema Vašková has always felt different. In a family full of famous scientists, there is no room for superstition or omens, but these seem to follow Ema wherever she goes. It doesn't help that she seems to predict events before they happen, or that she has a peculiar fear of shadows...
When she is sent to live for a season with her eccentric uncle in Prague, she fears losing the opportunity to ever fit in. But then she meets Silvie, a girl who finally sees her as the extraordinary person she is. Soon the girls start meeting for secret midnight adventures and face Ema's fears together.
But then disaster strikes. Silvie disappears, and it's up to Ema to find her. Now she will have to gather the courage to travel through the city, find her friend, and discover the secrets of the only clue Silvie left her about where she might be: in the mysterious Midnight Guild.
